Sharon Powell, CMT - Canine and humane massage therapy
Sharon Powell, CMT graduated from Boulder College of Massage Therapy in December 2002 with certification in canine and humane massage therapy. While attending BCMT, Sharon was active within the animal massage internship programs, and gained massage experience working on various breeds of dogs, horses, and rabbits. After graduating BCMT, Sharon continued her education by receiving a certification in equine sports massage. Sharon's experience with animals along with a deep love and respect for animals landed her a supervisory position at BCMT within the animal massage program teaching students equine massage at onsite equine internship. Massage is different than petting. Massage goes deeper, addressing various muscles that may be hyper-tonic(tight). As in humans, dogs also get tight, sore muscles, especially after long hikes, walks, or any extended outdoor activity, which will result in discomfort or restricted range of motion. These issues can show up as stiffness when your dog gets up after sitting or lying down and may also be noticed in an un-even gait (stiff while walking).
Massage for you dog is beneficial as it not only helps to relieve muscle soreness, but improves flexibility and circulation, bringing increased oxygen and nutrients to the muscle tissues. Massage can also help with stress related issues and behavior issues.
